Our Mission
To enhance the quality of life for the residents and visitors of Newport News through the provision of high quality facilities, programs and services that are safe, accessible and appealing.
Our Vision
The Newport News Department of Parks & Recreation oversees 36 public parks, 5 major community centers, 2 public golf courses, 2 public pools, a large tennis complex, an athletic park, a 188 site campground, 105 playgrounds, 35 picnic shelters, 50 miles of trails, a 194 slip marina, 5 senior centers, multiple youth program sites, 88 sports fields, a public rose garden, an aeromodel field, a disc golf course, and more.
The department was established by City Council on June 1st, 1941. At its inception, we oversaw the operation of a single public park at the east end of the James River Bridge.
