Free Saltwater fishing piers are located at Hilton Pier and King-Lincoln Park (sunrise to sunset daily), the Wave Screen Pier at King-Lincoln Park (open 24 hours), Denbigh Park (open sunrise to 10 p.m. daily), and the Monitor-Merrimac Overlook (open 24 hours). A Saltwater Fishing License is required to fish at these sites.
Huntington Park is home to the James River Fishing Pier (fee for fishing) which is the longest fishing pier on the East Coast.
Freshwater fishing is available sunrise to sunset at Lee Hall and Harwood’s Mill Reservoirs. Shoreline fishing requires a Parks Division Shoreline Fishing Permit in addition to the Virginia freshwater fishing license. Virginia fishing licenses are available for purchase online. Jon boats for fishing are available for rental year-round at the Newport News Park Campsite Office, and on weekends and holidays during the summer months at Lee Hall Fishing Area and the Harwood’s Mill concession office.
Fishermen may also launch privately-owned boats into the city’s reservoirs by purchasing a daily or annual Launch Permit. No gas motors are permitted, and a valid Virginia Freshwater Fishing License is required.
Boat rentals, private launch, and shoreline / pier fishing permits are available everyday from 7 a.m. to sunset at the Newport News Park Campsite Office. Lee Hall Fishing Area concession is open 12 p.m. to sunset on weekends and holidays, May through September.
