Main Events

Beginning Thanksgiving Day and extending through New Year’s Day, the City of Newport News lights up with the Ferguson NlightN Holiday Event Series. Pronounced “enlighten,” this series, sponsored by Ferguson, includes three main events – the classic Celebration in Lights at Newport News Park, the magical Lights at the Fountain at City Center, and the art and technology focused ARTech Lights at Brooks Crossing – along with additional events throughout the city.

Holiday Frost Dec 9th - Dec 10th

Holiday Frost “Cribs Edition”, Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center, December 9,

4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  Free admission, activities and parking. 

Come and explore the fun, quirky, and sweet “crib” of the king of Christmas, Santa Claus. Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center offers three floors of activities and fun during this dashing event, including 360 degree photos with Santa, Games, Karaoke, Candy giveaways, Cookies with Mrs. Claus, Make & take crafts, Face Painting and costumed characters (Heat Miser, Snow Miser, Snow Monster [Yeti], Reindeers and Elves). Free and open to the public. 

RSVP Requested (not required). Reservations can be made on the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center website.

COMPLEMENTARY TICKETS – The first 450 Holiday Frost “Cribs Edition” participants will receive a complementary ticket to the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center’s Saturday performances(s) of the Bright Star Touring Theatre Production, Holidays Around the World. The traditions and holidays which abound throughout winter are celebrated in this show. From Kwanzaa to Christmas to The Festival of Lights, this unique production includes a variety of celebrations that occur around the globe during this special time of year. Audience volunteers help bring in the Chinese New Year with a colorful dragon, while the Lori festival brings to the stage colorful costumes and stories from India.

Holiday Home Lights Tour

Holiday Home Lights Tour, a self-guided, city-wide tour of homes decorated for the holidays through January 1.  

Join the NlightN Holiday Home Lights Tour, which features light displays from local residents, businesses, places of worship and other organizations. Drivers will be taken from one end of the city to the other to enjoy light displays. Interested participants can visit the NlightN Holiday Tour website  and enter the address of the location that will be decorated. There is no cost to participate and all are invited to be part of the tour. The city has also created atour map  for people to find the decorated, brightly-lit areas in Newport News. Participants who sign up will be featured on the website and will be offered to pick up a sign announcing they are part of the tour. Everyone who registers will receive an email regarding pick up locations. 

Santa's Workshop Dec 3rd - dec 30th

Santa’s Workshop, Denbigh Community Center, Dec 3 – Dec 30. Free admission, activities and parking 

This year, Santa’s helpers have transformed Denbigh Community Center into Santa’s Workshop with festive holiday décor, painted windows, colorful lights and a sleigh. Free activities for the public include: toy and ornament workshops, children’s gift wrapping stations, a hot chocolate bar, holiday movies and more.  It’s a great location for family photos and selfies, too.   

Indoor Special Events: 

December 3rd Peninsula Dance Party Holiday Dance -  2:00 p.m. - 5 p.m. 

  • Includes basic ballroom dance lessons such as waltz, two step and swing. The dance is free however, reservations are required – call 757-812-7905. 

December 6th – 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (Geared towards the homeschool child and/or small children) 

  • Kidcreate with a holiday craft (clay tree and/or snowman ornament) 
  • Nutcracker Ornament for painting 
  • Holiday Movies: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (12pm) and Frosty the Snowman (1pm)

Hilton Village Gingerbread Celebration Dec 10

Hilton Village Gingerbread Celebration & Holiday Parade, Hilton Village (Warwick Boulevard and Main Street historic area), December 10, 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Free admission and parking.

Enjoy the season at Hilton Village’s Annual Village Gingerbread Celebration. The celebration includes the Hilton Holiday Market (artisans, crafters, beer garden and food trucks), Gingerbread Competition and Awards, and Merchant Holiday Open Houses.
