The Tour of Newport News is back for its second year and its bigger and better than ever. This 3 day, 4 event Omnium offers some of the best racing in the Mid-Atlantic. The Tour of Newport News runs from Friday, April 12th to Sunday, April 14th, 2024 and features Street Sprints on 23rd St on Friday night, the Crawford Road Time Trial on Saturday morning, the Newport News Twilight Criterium on Saturday Afternoon/Evening, and the Fort Eustis Circuit Race on Sunday. If you cannot stay for the whole weekend of racing you can still sign up for individual events on the registration page. We are happy to announce that Frankie Andreu is returning as the announcer for the Tour of Newport News and with over $14k in cash and prizes on offer for the weekend, and winners jerseys for the overall omnium champions, we promise it’s worth the trip. New for 2024 is a best young rider omnium competition for the following categories: Women’s Cat 4/5, Women’s Pro/1/2/3, Men’s Cat 4/5, Men’s Cat ¾, Men’s Cat 2/3, and Men’s Pro/1/2. The highest placed U-23 rider in their respective category in the omnium will also receive a winners jersey (*must be at least 5 qualifying participants to receive the complimentary jersey).
Event #1 – Friday Night Street Sprints, April 12 from 6:30 – 9:30pm at 2400 Washington Ave, Newport News, VA 23607
An elimination style, standing start sprint on a straight, slightly uphill 200 meter course. Between 4-6 riders will line up at a time, clipped in and being held upright at the start by volunteers and race head-to-head in a drag race. Heats will be separated by category depending on how many riders register. Expect to complete between 2-4 sprints depending on if you make it to the finals. Points will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in each category and count towards the omnium. Expect a party atmosphere with Frank Andreau announcing and drink specials from Coastal Fermentory. For 2024 we will run 2-3 categories at a time completely through their 1st round. These same categories will then complete their 2nd round before then completing the final round. This allows riders to only need to warm up once and also, they can complete their event and return home/hotels to prepare for the TT the next day. Brackets and starting times will be sent out along with the TT start times on Friday, April 11th in the morning.
Event #2 Crawford Road Time Trial, April 13th from 8:00 – 10:30am at Crawford Road
Short 5-mile TT on Crawford Road. Start order will be emailed out by Friday morning, April 12th. Riders will leave at 20 second intervals. There will not be a holder, you will be starting with a foot down. The start/finish line is approximately .25 miles from the parking lot at Yorktown Middle School. Signs will direct participants to the start/finish line. Portable toilets will be located at the parking lot. Omnium points will be awarded to the top 15 finishers in each category.
Event #3 Newport News Twilight Criterium, April 13th from 12:30 – 9:15pm at 2400 Washington Ave, Newport News, VA 23607
The Newport News Twilight Criterium will test your physical and technical limits. With eight 90 degree turns in 1 km this course sees a lot of attrition. The Cat 1/2 Men and Fixed Gear Open categories will both race at twilight/night under the lights. No on-bike lights are permitted for the Newport News Twilight Criterium, There is plenty of light from the streetlights and auxiliary tower lighting. Omnium points will be awarded to the top 15 finishers in each category.
Event #4 Ft. Eustis Circuit Race, April 14th from 8:00am – 3:00pm at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Newport News, VA 23604
This is a 5 km circuit race on an active-duty military base. Please see the previous sections or email the promoter for base access information. The parking lot is approximately .25 miles from the start/finish line. Omnium points will be awarded to the top 15 finishers in each category.
